Well, well, well. It is a snowy December evening and the McDermotts are once again under one roof. Meghan just got back from the video store with our dad and she brought home the greatest treat - Dreamscape the movie!! It is a 1983 movie starring Dennis Quaid. The antagonist is named Tommy Ray, which inpspired us to name our cat Dusty Ray. The movie only cost $1.99. What a steal of a deal!!!

MSNBC - News of the Weird: "Eccentric British rock musician Genesis P-Orridge (born Neil Megson) and his wife and partner, Lady Jaye Breyer, are gradually transforming themselves surgically into gender-neutral human beings ('pandrogynous') resembling each other, so that eventually they will be indistinguishable, to demonstrate how overrated gender is as a point of reference. (For example, he wore a lace dress at their wedding, and she dressed as a biker guy, with moustache, and for Valentine's Day 2003, each got breast implants.) P-Orridge told SF Weekly in October that their goal is to jointly become a third person, distinct from either of them. [SF Weekly, 10-27-04]"

A woman has been shot and a high school in lockdown after an incident in Brampton. Police are still trying to sort out details of what happened, but reports say a 40-year-old woman was apparently shot in the head outside Bramalea Secondary School in the Balmoral and Bramalea area.

The gunman apparently entered the campus sometime around 11:30am, fired at least one shot at the victim, then fled.

The unidentified woman has been rushed to Peel Memorial Hospital, but there’s no word on her condition, why she was targeted or what her connection to the school is. There are no reports of other injuries to anyone else, including students, but the building has been locked down as investigators hunt for clues.

“Right now the school is secure,” assures Brian Woodland of the Peel District School Board. “They're in lockdown. That's a precautionary measure we take to ensure staff and students are protected. In that case, all doors to classrooms are turned out, lights are turned out, curtains are shut and students and staff are on the floor.”

Many worried parents have arrived on the scene, but no one is being allowed in or out until authorities give the all clear. But officials say no students were hurt in the incident.

“We do want parents to know that all students are safe and fine inside," Woodland adds. “We’re taking good care of them.”

The suspect, said to be a man in his 40s, was last seen driving away from the scene in what’s described as a silver van. There have been no arrests so far, but police continue to scour the area for clues.

New York Post Online Edition: gossip KIEFER Sutherland's granddad Tommy Douglas has been voted "the Greatest Canadian" in a two-month, country-wide vote via a reality TV-type show on the CBC network. Douglas — Donald Sutherland's ex-daddy-in-law and the premier of Saskatchewan province — founded and championed the Soviet-style form of medicare so cherished by pious Canadians, who don't mind waiting years for elective surgery. Tommy battled against the likes of hockey great Wayne Gretzky and the inventor of the phone, Alexander Graham Bell, who was born in Scotland, and died an American, but did some work in Canada.

Mystery novelist Joseph Hansen dies "Joseph Hansen, a mystery novelist known for crisp, lean prose and for creating one of his genre's first gay protagonists.
Hansen's wife, Jane Bancroft, died in 1994. He once described their relationship as that of a gay man and woman who happened to love each other. 'Here was this remarkable person who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We were married 51 years. So something was right about it, however bizarre it may seem to the rest of the world,' he said. The couple had a daughter who later underwent gender reassignment. He is Hansen's only survivor" Gosh, and I thought our family was unusual...

Hello web travellers,

Somehow December has again arrived and I am starting to get butterflies in my stomach. Many folks have a melancholy attitude about the whole Christmas season - bad childhood memories, issues with consumerism. I do not fit in that category. I LOVE Christmas and and almost everything about it.
Meghan and I grew up loving Christmas and I don't think we've ever grown out of it. We spent countless hours listening to A Sesame Street Christmas, Bing Crosby, even Feliz Navidad (Meghan loves this song on some subliminal level, heh heh). The Sesame Street Christmas Albun is especially great. Bert and Ernie get themselves into a state because they can't afford gifts for eachother. So they got individually to Mr. Hooper's store and sell their paperclip collection and rubber duckie to be able to buy a gift. In the end Mr. Hooper gives them their items back as gifts and everyone is happy. At the end of the record is a song about how Christmas is over, but don't be sad. I always felt like crying when that song came on - I WAS so sad!
These days I love Christmas for other reasons. The biggest one is that I get to be reunited with my clan. It sucks to live provinces away from the very people who rock your world the most! In recent years the holiday season has come to mean an intense string of days filled with daytime adventures and late night sessions.
This year Meghan and I have a bigger issue to deal with while we are home: life after being students. We are both addicted to education, but the time has come for us to seek out some learning experiences outside of the walls of an institution. So, my fellow web travellers, please give us any suggestions: what does the world have in store for a teacher and a lawyer who are not ready to join the workforce?
